What is Municipal Solid Waste Sorting

Waste Sorting System is cutting-edge technology in the solid waste management industry. It is an automated sorting and recycling device, also known as a Material Recovery Facility (MRF). When combined with an organic waste treatment system, it can also be referred to as a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility.

MSWsorting® solutions can get high value recyclables separated from municipal solid waste, include ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal, plastic, paper, cardboard, glass and wood. Organic food waste is used to anaerobic digestion or composting. Inorganic inert waste is used to make building materials. Non-recyclable high calorific value waste is used to making RDF and SRF.

How does waste sorting machine work?

municipal solid waste enters the feeding system by grab or front loader, and then through pre-shredding and bag opening processing, using different screening equipment, such as trommel screens, ballistic screen, star screen and waste vibrating screen, separated waste to different size stream, and then use magnetic separation system, eddy current separation system, air separation system, optical sorting system and AI robot sorting system to get plastics, paper, metals and other recyclable materials.

  1. The organic waste is sorted out, it can be used for anaerobic digestion and biogas power generation, and the residue can be used for composting.
  2. After the inert waste is sorted out, it can be made into concrete aggregate, cement and building materials.
  3. The remaining non-recyclable high-calorific value waste often includes a small amount of mixed plastic film, a small amount of lightweight paper, composite fabrics, etc. After shredding, the size of this mixed waste is less than 50mm, which can be made RDF and SRF for incineration and power generation.

Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is a specialized waste sorting and recycling plant designed to receive, sort, process, and recover recyclable materials from mixed waste streams. These facilities play a crucial role in waste management systems by separating materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, and glass for recycling purposes.The recovered recyclables are then baled for sale to market, while the remaining organic waste is sent to the composting system, non-recyclable waste can be further processed (waste-to-RDF).

Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) is a waste management process that integrates mechanical and biological techniques to treat mixed municipal solid waste. The mechanical component involves pre-sorting, shredding, screening, and separating waste to recover recyclables and prepare organic material for biological treatment. The biological component includes composting or anaerobic digestion, which stabilizes the organic waste and produces valuable outputs such as compost or biogas for energy generation.

Waste-to-RDF is converting municipal solid waste into a high-calorific fuel suitable for industrial processes. Through sorting, shredding, and pelleting, non-combustible materials are removed, and the remaining waste is transformed into a uniform RDF pellet product. RDF offers a renewable energy source that reduces landfill reliance, mitigates environmental impacts, and contributes to sustainable waste management practices.
